Esther CARP (1897-1970) - Lot 124
Esther CARP (1897-1970) Untitled. Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. Countersigned and annotated "Paris VI" on the stretcher in pencil. 46 x 55 cm Provenance : - Léon-Lef Forster Collection Produced in her studio on rue Guénégaud (Paris VI on the reverse of the frame), this work also appears in the collection of photographer Marc Vaux (1920-1971) [Centre Pompidou/Bibliothèque Kandinsky]. In 2022, the Musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme in Paris devoted an unprecedented retrospective to Esther Carp, following the Villa Vassilief donation. The rediscovery of this long-forgotten twentieth-century artist, inspired by Cubism and fascinated by the chromatic force of Van Gogh, is considered by critic Chill Aronson to be "one of the most gifted women painters of the Paris School". This spotlight was also made possible by the work of EHESS doctoral student Agathe Weil, who in 2019 defended a thesis entitled "Esther Carp (1897-1970): une vie d'artiste de Skierniewice à Paris". On November 19, 2024, Magnin Wedry achieved the second record for a work by Esther Carp at the sale of Monsieur R.'s collection, with Autoportrait peignant, which fetched €4,680, confirming the growing interest of collectors.
