Emile Antoine BOURDELLE (1861-1929) - Lot 28
Emile Antoine BOURDELLE (1861-1929) Bacchante with grapes and base, large version, 1907-1908. Sculpture in terracotta patinated plaster. Signed and dedicated to Dr. E.F. Julia. 79 x 20 x 48 cm (height with base 82 cm). (Accident to the patina). Presumed provenance : - Doctor Julia's family - By descent - Collection of Monsieur X. A book entitled "Antoine Bourdelle, maître d'œuvre", written by Dr. Emile-François Julia, will be given to the purchaser. At the very beginning of the century, Bourdelle produced numerous variations on the bacchante, a theme that had always been popular with artists such as Carpeaux, Dalou and Rodin. A mythological figure of excess, even trance, the priestess of Bacchus gave rise to bold deformations, such as the opulent, bloated, almost shapeless Vieille Bacchante (1903). With Bacchante aux jambes croisées (1906), Bourdelle experimented with an improbable wiggle and played with the gracefulness of forms, twisting them to their breaking point. He continued his denaturing research with Bacchante aux raisins (1906-1907), a sculpture in which the figure staggers, almost staggers under the weight of this dislocated bunch of grapes. This model was so successful that Bourdelle offered numerous plaster casts, sometimes polychrome, to his friends and family (Redécouvrir Bourdelle, exhibition, press kit, 2012).
