Eugène Druet (1867-1916) - Lot 15
Eugène Druet (1867-1916) Statue of Balzac by Rodin photographed at the Salon de la société nationale des Beaux-Arts, 1898. Silver print pasted on sheet. Dedication by Rodin in ink at top right. Lacks, folds and restorations. 40 x 28.2 cm Exhibited in 1898 at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, this daring sculpture caused a controversy, with critics going wild. Rodin broke with tradition and the codes in force for a commemorative monument, and the Société rejected his sculpture. Determined to remain faithful to his own vision of Balzac, he felt that his work should not be altered. The commission was cancelled, Rodin returned the money and took his statue with him. He subsequently declined all offers to buy the work.
