L.A., Paris April 17, 1870, to his granddaughter Madeleine d - Lot 196
L.A., Paris April 17, 1870, to his granddaughter Madeleine de MALARET; 3 pages in-8 (small mourning) with her crowned cipher. Family news to one of the model granddaughters. She suffers from vertigo, and shuns "the church, whose stifled heat and continual movement increase my head spinning. I contented myself with a daily low morning mass and lived (outside) like a peasant". She has received the letter from Camille (Madeleine's sister), whose conduct with her father she praises, and talks about the summer's plans between Florence and Malaret. She discusses money problems: she has 500 francs taken to the banker. "Who knows what could happen. Mme WALEWSKA, so rich now, was mending her stockings by candlelight during the 1848 revolution [ ] And there are so many examples of the vicissitudes of fortune". She's waiting for her little Jacques [de Pitray]: "He's sailing alone tomorrow for Livet, where he'll rest from his work. He must be tired, as he always supports himself in the top 2, and all his conduct is excellent". She is about to leave for Kermadio, where she will meet up with Elisabeth [Fresneau], who "is sorry in advance not to see Madeleine this summer". She ends her letter by embracing the whole family
