François-René de CHATEAUBRIAND. L.S. with one autograph line - Lot 185
François-René de CHATEAUBRIAND. L.S. with one autograph line, Paris March 28, 1844, to John Wilson CROKER, in West-Moseley; 1 1/2 pages in-4, addressed. Regrets not seeing his friend on his last trip to London: "I had scarcely strength to get up & run a few errands with the Duke of Bordeaux. At last my life has been full; in these times, that's something". He tells her of his friendship: "My invariability has made me almost forgiven my opinions by the men of this country"; and he adds with a trembling hand, "I can barely write and sign". Attached is a fragment cut from the end of another L.S., the signature followed by this autograph line: "You know that I can no longer write".
