[Chateaubriand had been arrested on June 16 and released on June 30] He has read "in your excellent journal, all the kind things you have said about me" and thanks him wholeheartedly. "These people are angry with me for telling them, in front of their law and under lock and key, that I didn't know where they were coming from. They felt the impact of such a challenge and the road it opened up for their enemies. What can I say today that was worth my silence with the examining magistrate?
