Carlo SOCRATE (1889-1967) Costume design for a ballet Gouache on thin cardboard, monogrammed lower right, annotated in pencil at bottom "Carlo Socrate (exhibition for the Ballets Russes, Strasbourg" 43.4 x 28 cm Carlo Socrate settled in Rome in 1914. He began exhibiting in 1911 and worked as a decorator with Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, notably during their visit to Rome in 1917. This experience introduced him to several avant-garde artists, including Picasso, with whom he created the gigantic Red Curtain for the ballet Parade.
