ANNENKOV Yuri Georges (1889-1974) Self-portrait Bronze proof - Lot 209
ANNENKOV Yuri Georges (1889-1974) Self-portrait Bronze proof with medal patina. Monogrammed below, numbered EA 4/4. Valsuani founder's stamp. Dimensions (excluding base): 41 x 24 x 31 cm This self-portrait was inspired by Annenkov's friendship with Zadkine, whom he considered his best friend in France and whose portrait he painted on several occasions. It is both a sculptural relief and a graphic work. Note the original treatment of the hollowed-out eye wearing the monocle. The original plaster cast of this self-portrait, which appeared on the mantelpiece of Annenkov's studio on rue Campagne Première in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, dated from the 1930s, is in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. Copies were cast in the 1960s at the request of Serge Lifar, Annenkov's friend and collaborator for the sets of several of his ballets.
