ZADKINE Ossip (1888-1967) Original plaster of Annenkov's 191 - Lot 208
ZADKINE Ossip (1888-1967) Original plaster of Annenkov's 1911 portrait Plaster. H: 29 cm - W: 23 cm D: 28 cm The story behind this plaster is very picturesque. In 1911, Annenkov and Zadkine, friends from Russia, met in Paris. During a walk together, they found themselves on the outskirts of a room formerly occupied by Zadkine. It was there that the owner of the room called out to Zadkine: "Master, when you left, you forgot a few pieces". These included this plaster cast of a slightly damaged nose. After surgery, the plaster was recovered by Annenkov. In the 1950s, Zadkine asked him to cast two bronzes from it. One of these now belongs to the Musée Zadkine, while the second, owned by Annenkov, was sold by Sotheby's in 2002, together with Annenkov's studio. This plaster also featured in that sale, but was withdrawn by his heirs, and the current owner acquired it from them. In this way, the provenance and filiation have been established: this is the original 1911 plaster used to cast in bronze the portrait of Annenkov featured in the Musée Zadkine catalog.
