BARGUE Charles (Paris 1825 - id. ; 1883) Man seated from behind Oil on panel. Annotated on the reverse in pen: Etude de Ch. de Bargue pour le tableau du joueur d'échec. Collection Jousset de Bellesme. H. 24 W 16.5 cm Study for the Jeu d'échec sur la terrasse (1882-1883) from the former William Henri Vanderbilt (1821-1885) collection. Provenance: The inscription on the reverse most likely refers to Georges Jousset de Bellesmes (1839-1925), physician, fish farmer and prehistorian, renowned collector of oriental intaglios (Cf. Louis Speleers, SYRIA. Archéologie, Art et Préhistoire, 1923, no. 4-3, pp. 19-204). The Jeu d'échec painting (Panel; 28.5 x 43 cm) sold at Christie's, New York, May 23, 1997 (no. 162), is the subject of an extensive history and analysis on the Wikipedia encyclopedia website.
