DUCROS Louis-Abraham-Rodolphe (Yverdon 1748 - Lausanne 1810) La Basilique de Maxence ou le Temple de la Paix. Watercolor and white gouache highlights on some black stone indications. Traces of gum arabic. Glued to sheet. Framed in pen and ink. Signed, dated and located lower left on the original mounting sheet: L.R. Ducros pinx: Romae 1785. On the reverse, an old pen-and-ink inscription Vuë des Ruines du Temple de La Paix à Rome. H. 54 W. 75.5 cm Provenance: Burton Constable Hall (Yorkshire) During his stay in Rome (1776 - 1793), Louis-Abraham-Rodolphe Ducros painted several pictures of the Basilica of Maxentius, located in the Imperial Forum (New Haven, Yale Center for the British Art, Paul Mellon coll.; Musée de Lausanne). These three vaults, the most imposing ruins in Imperial Rome, were known as the Temple of Peace. In fact, "as the archaeological excavations of the 19th century showed, this was the north wing of a vast basilica begun by Maxentius during his brief reign (306 - 312 AD) and completed by Constantine (Cf.
