Dog" brooch in 18K gold 750 thousandths, with twisted hair, eyes and nose studded with rubies, the body made of heliolite or "sun stone", a variety of oligoclase with a triclinic crystal system and a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale. It was so named by mineralogist Jean Claude Delamétherie in 1801 because of its numerous flakes, reminiscent of the glittering sun.
