ROMAN SCHOOL First Quarter 17th century Portrait... - Lot 28 - Magnin Wedry
ROMAN SCHOOL First Quarter 17th century Portrait of Cardinal Giacomo Sannesio, or Sannesi, Bishop of Orvieto and Camerlingue of the Sacred College (Belforte del Chienti 1544 - Rome 1621) Oil on canvas. H.189 - L. 106 cm (Re-tooled) We propose to compare the portrait of a cardinal reproduced above with that of Cardinal Giacomo Sannesio (or Sannesi) by Guido Reni (1575-1642) painted in 1609 (Cf. 1 - Galerie Canesso exhibition catalog, Deux tableaux de la collection Sannessi ; Lothar Sickel, Portrait du cardinal Sannesi, pp. 6 15 Paris 2006 ; 2 - Communication by Giuseppe Valentini Malavolti, La fortuna del Cardinale Giacomo Sannesio nella Roma del 600 Castel Giorgio may 2018). A renowned collector, Cardinal Giacomo Sannessio left his name in art history as the purchaser of two paintings by Caravaggio, originally commissioned for the church of Santa Maria del Popolo by the pope's treasurer Tiberio Cerasi, whom they would have displeased: The Crucifixion of St. Peter, now lost, and The Conversion of St. Paul from the Odescalchi collection, and which were to be replaced by the versions now in place (Cf. Sebastien Schütze, Caravaggio The Complete Works, no. 25, p.105 261 - Taschen 2015).
