Rare skeleton of dwarf hippopotamus fossil.... - Lot 159 - Magnin Wedry
Rare skeleton of dwarf hippopotamus fossil. The dwarf hippopotamus of Madagascar (hippopotamus lemerlei, Grandidier 1868.) so called because of its small size (maximum 2m) is a fossil species of Pleistocene age endemic to the island of Madagascar. It lived in the plains of the SW of the island in an environment of rivers and swamps. These hippos migrated from Africa by swimming, and reached the island of Madagascar in the middle of the Pleistocene (1 million years ago), they survived until the Holocene and disappeared completely around the 10th century AD. Their extinction as well as that of all the Pleistocene megafauna of Madagascar (Aepyornis, giant lemur, giant tortoise) is very probably linked to the colonization of the island by prehistoric man (around -10000 years). Dimensions of the skeleton : H. 94cm - L.194cm There are no customs restrictions on the export of this piece (document in possession of the owner).
