Africa. For thousands of years, pots were... - Lot 102 - Magnin Wedry
Africa. For thousands of years, pots were the first and only artifacts made by transforming raw materials, as opposed to modifying them. "The shaping of clay by the hand of Man and the transformation of this malleable material into ceramics by means of firepossesses a primitive, almost magigue quality" (in "Arts de la Haute Bénoué", Musée du Quai Branly, 2012). These pots are considered as people in their own right. Their decorations give them a sacred status. Often humanoid in appearance, they could be used for healing. The pouring spout of these vessels is shaped like a head with a wide open mouth, the meticulous patterns may be scar reliefs due to ritual scarification. Ceramic, pigments. H. : . Literature: "Nigeria, Arts of the Benue Valley", Musée du Quai Branly, 2012. (Africa, African Art, Civilization and ethnic groups).
