Edouard CORTES (1882–1969) Château de Cormelles, 1947 Oil on - Lot 38
Edouard CORTES (1882–1969) Château de Cormelles, 1947 Oil on canvas. Signed, located, and dated in the lower right corner. 90 x 150 cm. Provenance: Le Dain family collection. This painting was commissioned from the artist Cortès by Albertine Le Dain, the partner of Mr. Bouvet, who owned the house from the 1930s to the 1960s. Cortès’s stay in the village of Cormelles-le-Royal (Normandy) is evidenced by oil paintings depicting another 18th-century château in the same village (La Guerinière), dated 1939 (see Nicole Verdier Catalog, nos. 501, 502, 503, 504). Stylistically, the painting can be linked to the artist’s non-Parisian works, painted in various villages (a grove of flowers, golden yellow hues, shades of soft greens, and autumnal reds).
