SNYDERS Frans (Attributed to) (Antwerp 1579... - Lot 41 - Magnin Wedry
SNYDERS Frans (Attributed to) (Antwerp 1579 - id.; 1657) Guard - eating with a man holding a cluster of reasons. In front of him on a table garnished with a red drape basket of grapes, a bowl of strawberries, a bunch of tied asparagus and artichoke, hare, pheasant hen, field birds and melon. Oil on canvas (Rentokilage; some restorations, especially around the perimeter) H. 109 - W. 81.5 cm The same young servant, identical in every way, holding a deer leg instead of a bunch of vines, appears in a kitchen scene by Frans Snyders, also built high up next to a rich basket of grapes (Cf. Hella Robels, Frans Snyders, Fig. 13. II. pp. 179 - 180. - 1989 - Edith Greindl, Flemish Still Life Painters in the 17th Century, p.377 n° 151 - 1983). A second signed composition belonging to the Pinakothek in Munich (ca. 1615 - 1620) Pantry with Game and a Servant, (Canvas; 135 x 201 cm) again shows a young man turned to his right ostensibly clutching an opulent bunch of grapes. The various still life motifs, basket of grapes, hare, cherry bowl, bunch of asparagus and artichokes are found with the same desire for expressive variation arranged in a similar fashion. Finally, a third composition, signed, on a motif that is always comparable, with a man holding a bunch of black grapes in his left hand (ca. 1614 - 1617) Custody and hunter (Canvas; 165 x 231 cm) is kept at the Gemäldegalerie in Pommersfelden (Cf. Susan Koslow, Snyders, Figs. 74 & 75, 76 & 80, pp.68 - 69 & 71 - Fonds Mercator, Antwerp 1995) A basket of white and black grapes, very similar to the one presented here, placed on a red drape, from the same years (1615 - 1620) Still life with fruit and small game (Panel; 70 x 109 cm) belongs to the House of Rubens of Antwerp (inv.S.133).
