Bibliography: "Sakti Burman", collective work under the direction of Sakti Burman, Imprimerie de Blayac, 1984, reproduced in colors, p.54. An Indian painter, Sakti Burman, trained at the College of Art and Craft in Calcutta, is fascinated by Western culture and art. Settled in Paris in the 1950s, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts on a scholarship. At the end of his training, Sakti returns to India and tries to synthesize his teachings on Western art and his Indian culture. The painter then develops a very particular style where silhouettes evoking Italian frescoes and Hindu and Buddhist deities meet. When the artist settled permanently in Paris in 1960, geometric abstraction was in vogue, while Sakti's evocative painting was in total contrast to this movement. Religious representations and traditional domestic scenes, the artist's favorite themes, summon both the simplicity of an almost naive painting and the refinement of a dreamlike religious painting. Sakti creates, in Maya's Dream, a dreamlike world where owls, flying elephants and trees of life rub shoulders with characters with the faces of Greek icons. His technique combines a mixture of stamping and blurring evoking the frescoes of the Buddhist caves of Ajanta (India, Maharashtra region). The delicate hues blend into a set of patterns evoking Indian fabrics or oriental silks. The architecture of the building allows for the representation of several scenes reminiscent of the principle of Persian miniatures. Time seems to be suspended: the musicians give a mystical aubade to the sleeping young woman, probably Maya the daughter of the artist and Maïté Delteil. His works are kept in French and foreign museums (British museum, National Gallery of New Zealand, Musée de la Ville de Paris, National Gallery of New Delhi, Punjab Museum, All India Fine Art and Crafts Society, Air India Chandigarh Museum, Bhava Atomic Center, Bombay, Musée Denon, Chalons-sur-Saône, Mairie de Colombes, Musée Rapin, Villeneuve-sur-Lot, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Ville d'Eaubonne)
